The Brief

The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech needed to capture a truly singular fashion exhibition: The Hamish Bowles Collection—a remarkable collection shaped by decades of passion, knowledge, and obsession.

However, documenting the exhibition wasn't enough. The museum wanted a film that could complement the physical experience, reveal the story behind the collection, and give audiences a deeper connection to the person who brought these extraordinary pieces together.

Boatman Media was commissioned to create a short-form documentary that would live beyond the gallery walls—capturing not only the clothes, but the passion, craftsmanship, and human story behind them.

The Challenges

The challenge was to tell the story of an exhibition that was, by its very nature, temporary—while making the film feel as timeless and considered as the collection itself.

The real story centered on why Hamish Bowles collected them, what he saw in them, and the extraordinary journey from private collection to international exhibition.

There was also the challenge of capturing the scale and sophistication of the project without making it feel overly institutional. The film needed to speak to a wide audience, both newcomers and those deeply familiar with fashion and design, while still making the story accessible, emotional, and personal.

Additionally, the production itself spanned two very different worlds. Working with American and Moroccan crews, Boatman Media had to maintain a consistent creative vision across continents, cultures, and production environments—while documenting an exhibition that was constantly evolving as it moved from collection to installation.

The approach was intentionally cinematic and intimate. Rather than simply documenting what was happening, Boatman looked for the moments that revealed the obsession behind the objects—the details, decisions, craftsmanship, personalities, and emotion that ultimately brought the exhibition to life.

The goal was simple: make the audience feel the passion after they experienced the exhibition.

The Results

541,000 Visitors during the Hamish Bowles Collection exhibition

The Musée YSL Marrakech welcomed 541,000 visitors during the Hamish Bowles Collection exhibition, making it a significant cultural event in Marrakech and internationally.

The film became part of the broader international campaign surrounding the exhibition, extending the story beyond the museum and creating a permanent visual record of an exhibition that existed for a limited time.

It also gave the collection something the physical exhibition could not: a life beyond the gallery walls. The film preserved not only the garments, but the people, passion, and extraordinary attention to detail behind them.

The documentary went on to win a Gold Telly Award for Short-Form Documentary and was selected for the Grove and Pines Film Festival.

For Boatman Media, the project demonstrated the power of documentary storytelling to do more than document culture—it can preserve it, amplify it, and give it a life long after the doors of the exhibition have closed.
